T. Eaton Company's Punkinhead

Our dog's name, Punky, was short for Punkinhead, a character created by the T. Eaton Company. Eatons started the Santa Claus Parade back in 1905* and had a wonderful Toyland on the fifth floor of its downtown Toronto branch at Yonge and Queen Streets, complete with a train that took us children through a glittery land that primed our imagination for Santa and for Christmas. (Here's a photo of that train before it got to Eaton's in the 1940s.)

Our dog ‘Punkinhead’ had a curly topknot like the little Eaton’s bear.

(*In 1982, after 77 years, Eaton's announced that it could no longer sponser the parade. Within three days, twenty companies had promised their support to sponsor the floats, and the parade was saved.)
